Sorcerous Deeds #2

A stolen artifact. An imminent deadline. A tenacious investigator.

JB runs a private detective agency for the magically challenged, but if business doesn’t pick up soon, he’ll have to close the doors for good. When someone steals Hekate’s chalice, JB and his maverick team jump at the chance to track down the supernatural object. They’re resourceful and determined, but can they outsmart wizards, witches, and daemons before the client’s deadline expires?

If you like gripping mysteries interwoven with generous doses of magic and humor, then you’re going to love ‘Hekate’s Chalice’, the first volume of the ‘Adept Solutions’ series.

I was born in London of Irish parents, and I write in several genres including paranormal urban fantasy and commercial women’s fiction. I also write science-fiction, magic realism, crime, and romance stories.

I love traveling, enjoy photography, drawing, theater, film, reading, and when it’s not raining, I like to walk. I garden when the sun shines. I’m also compiling an ever increasing bucket list of places I want to visit from Iceland to Australia.

My Review: ✰✰✰✰

This was a really fun introduction to some really awesome characters. So far there are only two books in this series, and I have only read the first one, but I really hope Ms. Kearney is hard at work on more of these.

There was no real depth to this because it was a novella and there just is never enough of one to get lost in it! But it is a super beginning to the series and introduced us to the supernatural investigators of JB’s business. JB’s having a rough time right now with his father in a coma and his grandfather dropping in after a long time not being around. And I do mean a really long time, like decades! He’s a bit scary, too. The private investigation business JB’s taking over from his father is rapidly going under unless he can get some more clients with well-lined pockets. And he only has a year to do it.

The author has given us a cast of characters to really have some fun with! There’s a tiny faerie named Zhanna who’s on probation for internet crimes. There are the copper-haired twins, Jason and Gemma, who are nothing alike. Hekate is a witch who tells the future by the month for the mayor on Sunday after church and gives tarot readings for local business leaders. Nikki is only half imp, but she’s full-on organization and computer skills to kill for. JB, as in Jean-Baptiste Jr., is from a long line of daemons. Remember the grandfather who has dropped in after decades? Well, he just pops in out of the aether, like from hell.

I’ve got the second (also a novella) book ready to read when I get a chance. I recommend this lively little gem to those of you who like what I’m calling a “magical cozy mystery with bite”.
